The Origin of Pride Month

Pride Month, celebrated every June, is a vibrant and meaningful time for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. But how did this joyful and impactful celebration come to be? Let's dive into the origin of Pride Month and explore the significant events and figures that paved the way.

The Spark: Stonewall Riots

The story of Pride Month begins with the Stonewall Riots, which occurred in June 1969. The Stonewall Inn was a popular gay bar in New York City's Greenwich Village. Because of rules against LGBTQ+ behavior, the police often raided the bar. However, on June 28, 1969, the patrons decided enough was enough. They fought back, leading to days of protests and clashes with law enforcement. This event is widely considered the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

The First Pride March

The following year, on June 28, 1970, the first Pride marches were held to commemorate the Stonewall Riots. These initial marches took place in New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. The participants marched to demand equal rights and celebrate their identity openly. This marked the beginning of what would evolve into Pride Month.

Growth and Recognition

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Pride celebrations spread across the United States and eventually around the world. Each year, more cities joined in, hosting parades, festivals, and educational events. The rainbow flag, designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978, became a symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and diversity.

Official Recognition

In 1999, President Bill Clinton officially declared June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month in the United States. President Barack Obama expanded this in 2009 to include the entire LGBTQ+ community. This made June even more of a time to remember and enjoy LGBTQ+ history and accomplishments.

A Time for Celebration and Advocacy

Today, Pride Month is celebrated with parades, parties, workshops, and other events. It's a time for the LGBTQ+ community to come together, celebrate their identity, and continue the fight for equality and justice. The pride month origin is rooted in the bravery and resilience of those who fought back at Stonewall and those who continue to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights today.

Knowing where Pride Month came from helps us understand the events and the ongoing fight for freedom more fully. Let's remember the past and the brave people who made Pride Month possible while we enjoy the parades and parties.
